Rigger Operator Safety Training

1. Regulations & Compliance

• Compliance with OSHA 1926.251 and ASME B30.9 standards.

• Riggers must be trained, qualified, and evaluated before performing rigging duties.

2. Types of Rigging Equipment

• Slings (Wire rope, synthetic, chain slings)

• Hooks, Shackles, and Lifting Beams

• Hoists, Cranes, and Derricks

• Rigging Hardware (Turnbuckles, eye bolts, clamps)

3. Pre-Use Inspection

• Inspect slings, hooks, shackles, and other rigging hardware for wear, damage, and defects.

• Check for proper load weight limits and ensure correct rigging angles.

• Ensure rigging equipment is appropriate for the task at hand.

4. Safe Rigging Practices

• Balance Loads: Use correct lifting points and ensure the load is evenly distributed.

• Taglines: Always use taglines to control the load during lifts.

• Proper Slinging Techniques: Ensure slings are properly positioned to avoid slipping or chafing.

• Load Assessment: Always verify the load weight and dimensions before rigging.

5. Common Hazards & Prevention

• Slips, Trips, and Falls: Maintain clear walkways and proper footwear.

• Pinch Points & Crushing: Stay clear of rigging equipment’s operational zones.

• Equipment Failure: Inspect equipment before use and ensure it's in proper working condition.

• Falling Loads: Double-check rigging and lifting procedures before lifting.

6. Emergency Procedures

• Load Drop: If a load becomes unstable, stop the lift and ensure a safe distance is maintained.

• Equipment Malfunction: Report and tag out defective rigging equipment.

• Injury or Accident: Immediately notify a supervisor and follow first-aid procedures.

7. Certification & Refresher Training

• Initial Certification: Includes classroom training, hands-on practice, and final assessment.

• Refresher Training: Required every 3 years or after a safety incident.
